Apples and Bookmarks

By: Sofia Fadzil

On the 29th of January, anyone passing by the LRC was offered an apple and a bookmark for free and everyone wondered the same thing; why? Most people guessed that it had something to do with Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) birthday, but why give away apples and bookmarks?

Well, the NUMed Islamic Society felt that the best way to celebrate him was to follow in his teachings which always encouraged good deeds. So that’s what they did. For one hour, they stood by the LRC and handed people free apples and free bookmarks with quotations from Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). The event was aimed to offer gifts to the NUMed community and to show the kind of man Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was.

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was a man who preached good will and practiced it throughout his life. Imam Bukhari reported that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) once said "Be kind, for whenever kindness becomes part of something, it beautifies it. Whenever it is taken from something, it leaves it tarnished." This describes the atmosphere of that one hour. With all the apples, juices and bookmarks given away, everyone was happy and content with the healthy beverages they got.

That day was a great reminder that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was a simple man who called people to a way of life according to the Holy Quran; as the verse 2:215 has mentioned "They ask you (O Muhammad) what they should spend in charity. Say: 'Whatever you spend with a good heart, give it to parents, relatives, orphans, the helpless, and travelers in need. Whatever good you do, God is aware of it.'" Although it’s only with apples and bookmarks, the good deed done in honor of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) would hopefully benefit us all and help us live a life the way he did; full of love and peace.
