NUMed Open Day

By: Ashmeera Sevellaraja

On the 23rd of February, NUMed hosted its second open day. It was a day filled with new faces – some terrified and some excited, as prospective students visited the campus grounds with their parents as part of the decision making process that is characteristic of medical school.

The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) was the hub of the event – with booths set up by the various sectors of the university, as well as external companies such as Digi, Maxis and even Ledang Heights. The Student Council was also present to help answer questions, mainly pertaining to how the course is structured and the social aspect of studying at NUMed.

Visitors began the day by registering at the LRC, before embarking on campus tours led by Professor Bradley and senior lecturers. They were taken to see the lecture halls, anatomy and clinical skills labs as well as most of the prominent facilities around campus.

They were then ushered to the Baylis lecture theatre, and subsequently the Iskandar Demo Theatre for introductory talks about the MBBS and Biomedical Sciences courses respectively. Here, there was the opportunity for visitors to get to know the courses a little better, and to be able to present any queries they might have to the deans and lecturers present.

Many current NUMed students were available in the LRC throughout the day to answer any questions that parents or prospective students may have, or to help guide the visitors around campus. The volunteers were ever ready with a smile on their faces – whether dealing with concerned parents asking about living facilities or just to show them where the toilets were.

Souvenirs were also available in the LRC, ranging from t-shirts to pens to wooden key chains of Bell’s Court. Though these were probably intended for the guests, it was seen that NUMed students were the ones buying more items!

All in all, the event was seen to be a great success. There was great rapport between current students and staffs alike during the day as they strove to make visitors feel at home. The friendliness, eloquence and warmth displayed by our people were sure to help prospective students make a firm decision of coming to NUMed.
